A New, Standardized Way To Display Your ABO-Board Certified™ Credential
Posted on: 8/19/2025
The ABO now officially recognizes the use of "ABO-Board Certified" directly following your academic credentials.
Why Standardization Matters
- Promotes clarity for patients, colleagues, and regulatory bodies.
- Aligns with common practices across the broader medical field.
- Enhances public recognition of what board certification means.
How To Format Your Credentials
To establish consistency, the ABO recommends listing your credentials in the following order:
- Dental Degree(s): DDS, DMD, or equivalent
- Advances Academic Degree(s): MS, MSD, PhD, etc.
- Board Certification: ABO-Board Certified
- Fellowships or Honors: FACD, FICD, FRCD(C), etc.
Note: Always follow jurisdictional requirements for professional identification.
Additional examples of correct formatting:
- Joe Q. Smith, DMD, MS, ABO-Board Certified
- Jane Q. Smith, DMD, MSD, MS, PhD, ABO-Board Certified
- Joan Q. Smith, BChD, BChD-Hons; MChD, ABO-Board Certified, FRCD(C)
Where To Display Your Credentials
All active board certified orthodontists are encouraged to update their professional materials and public profiles using the recommended format above to strengthen recognition of board certification.
