The American Board of Orthodontics is proud to introduce a standardized format for active board certified orthodontists to display their certification that reflects commitment to excellence in patient care, lifelong learning, and clinical expertise.

The ABO now officially recognizes the use of "ABO-Board Certified" directly following your academic credentials.

Example: John Q. Smith, DDS, MS, ABO-Board Certified

This trademarked designation aligns with the ethical standards set by both the American Dental Association (ADA) Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct and Principles of Ethics, Code of Professional Conduct, and Advisory Opinions of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), ensuring the truthful and ethical communication of board certification, as well as accurate and transparent information for the public. Refer to the ABO Brand Standards and Marks Usage Guidelines for proper representation.

Why Standardization Matters

Board certification is a credential you’ve earned, and it should be represented in a way that’s both professional and easily understood. Standardizing the display of this achievement:
  • Promotes clarity for patients, colleagues, and regulatory bodies.
  • Aligns with common practices across the broader medical field.
  • Enhances public recognition of what board certification means.
The goal is to provide a clear, fact-based representation of your verified credentials and to display an achievement you can be proud of.

How To Format Your Credentials

To establish consistency, the ABO recommends listing your credentials in the following order:

  1. Dental Degree(s): DDS, DMD, or equivalent
  2. Advances Academic Degree(s): MS, MSD, PhD, etc.
  3. Board Certification: ABO-Board Certified
  4. Fellowships or Honors: FACD, FICD, FRCD(C), etc.

Note: Always follow jurisdictional requirements for professional identification.

Additional examples of correct formatting:

  • Joe Q. Smith, DMD, MS, ABO-Board Certified
  • Jane Q. Smith, DMD, MSD, MS, PhD, ABO-Board Certified
  • Joan Q. Smith, BChD, BChD-Hons; MChD, ABO-Board Certified, FRCD(C)

Where To Display Your Credentials

All active board certified orthodontists are encouraged to update their professional materials and public profiles using the recommended format above to strengthen recognition of board certification.
